Life update
Well, a lot of good news to report. I recently got a job with a company here in the creative section. My official position is "graphic desiner", perfect for me and exactly what I want. It's really close to my place and takes me only 20 minutes to get there too! The creative section is looking to expand in the near future and are looking to me for the support to do so. Some might be scared, but I'm actually quite happy with it. I will be getting a lot of say in the design aspect of things which is really hard to find in the creative industry... well in the bigger companies at least. So, the only thing left to do is get the immigration part of it out of the way. Hopefully the government gives me the VISA and I can stay for another year. Ugh, immigration office... not looking forward to it.
On the personal side, life if good. Friends are great. My skills as a designer are constantly growing with all the experimenting and free time I've been having recently (which won't be the case coming November 26th). I recently got a hold of the new iPod Touch. This thing is amazing. Nothing else to say but... sexy.
Here is a little update photo of the man behind the blog.
And one of the newest pieces sent off to press today. A t-shirt design for a Japanese clothing company.

Hi Cody, followed you over here from iLT (I'm LaurenMarie from Creative Curio). You're quite knowledgeable about typography! Took a look at your portfolio, too. Amazing! I can see you talk the talk and walk the walk with type. You seem to not have been designing very long, only about 3 years? You have an amazing talent. I would love to know how you honed such a brilliant sense of design! Do you talk about that on your blog? I'm going to have to poke around a bit :)
Hey Lauren, great to see you here!
Thank you very much for the kind words. I know I am pretty straight forward with my opinions and thoughts when commenting on iLT, but I hope that seeing a little of my work has but some backing behind those.
Yes, I have been designing "professionally" for about 3 years, but have been playing with the programs for about 5 or 6. I never really dipped into typography until about 2 years ago during school. Ever since then, it has been my focus. I wouldn't say my sense is honed, I am still learning day to day. I take pride in following something I love with a passion and I have done so with design. I love to know everything about it, and I always keep up with current trends or techniques. I guess it all started with my teacher in school pushing my projects past the point where I thought they were finished. This really opened me up when creating something and I guess I am my own worst enemy when it comes to actually doing work... I can never see it as good because I know it can always be better.
Take a look around, I don't get around to posting much, but the more I know people are reading... the more motivation I will have to keep it fresh! Any other questions, of course feel free to ask or drop me a line at codycurley@gmail.com
Cheers!!
I don't think being straight forward is a negative thing, it helps us all see your point more clearly. And you have very good input, which is all the better!
So where do you find your inspiration, Cody? You have a similar style throughout your work. It's awesome to hear how helpful your professors were in school. I had some like that, too, but I think they didn't push me as hard as they could (or as much as I would like!) because I am a girl. The ratio was about 1:15, girls to guys, and the professors tended to be less involved with us, which gave us less chance to learn and extend our skills. Oh well.
I think every designer, well every good designer, always feels that a piece is never done!
Will you be writing for iLT any time soon? I know John is going on a business trip, maybe you could guest post! (I hope he doesn't mind me saying that) Maybe talk about inspiration/influences in your typography decisions. Give us some insight into your process, and show off a little of your portfolio!
I certainly don't mind you talking about that, Lauren :)
In fact he has already written something, and I'm saving it for that business trip.
Awesome, I'm glad you enjoy the straight comments. Some people, mostly new designers, can't seem to that them for what they are. Even though I am a new designer myself, I find myself thinking a little differently from the newer designers. Maybe just a little more realistic at least.
Hmmm, inspiration. Obviously, like most designers, experimenting often brings something up. Sometimes I will be playing in illustrator or photoshop and I do something just because I can. Then maybe a few months later I will get a job and then that old "just for fun" document turns into some great graphics for the new project. Also, magazines and books are a huge inspiration. I wish I had the money to buy all the book I want. There are a few design magazines here in Japan that are absolutely amazing (+81 and Idea). And finally, other designers. Looking through communities, grabbing ideas, resources, concepts, ect. ect. Many people are scared to take ideas from other designers, I don't quite understand why because when you make it your own, well it'S just that... your own.
Yeah, I think sometimes it's quite hit and miss with instructors at design school. There were a few teachers of mine who were stuck in the 1980's. Literally, he told me that any type over 16pt must be taken out (for headlines I might add). So I brought him the Type Director's book from that year and pointed out all the huge type used throughout the last years projects. He shut up quite quickly. Heehee ;)
Like Johno said, there is a little something coming up. I'm actually quite interested to see what people have to say on it ;)
